Apparently "mother" is the most beautiful word in the English language according to a global survey of non-English speakers by The British Council. Other favorites in the top 70 included "hodgepodge," "banana" (really an English word?) and "whoops." The proper 70-year-old British educational organization is crowing about how words like "freedom" and "liberty" ranked high, though strangely it makes no mention of the richly expressive "oi" (61st out of 70). Very busy month. But I met a man from a company that wants to send cricket scores -- maybe even video clips -- to South Asians in the U.S. He knows a good opportunity when he sees one: There aren't a lot of places to get cricket news in America. It's not on TV or radio, except for two minutes now and then in a few cities. Cell phones are a back channel to the diaspora, helped along by the example of their phone-loving relatives back home and the company's lessons from doing the same thing there. Naturally they also operate in the Philippines and are looking at the Filipino-American market. I wish him luck. It's not as mind-blowing as South Asian cab drivers in New York installing a special crystal in their two-way radios so they could talk on "in-between" channels, as Vivek Bald discusses in the book Technicolor, but it's definitely an ethnic minority community seizing upon a technology. openslaande deuren
When average people reach out to others across borders to try to make the world a better place, it can be inspiring and thought-provoking, but sometimes it's just irritating and pretentious. Take this campaign by the Guardian newspaper in the U.K. It may not have the intended result. regenkleding
Nope, the trailer doesn't do it justice. Makes it look like one of those "In a world where ..." movies. I'm talking about The Motorcycle Diaries, a movie about Che Guevara's early travels. It bounces along like an old motorcycle on a dirt road, ever so gradually gaining momentum as Guevara and his companion gain depth, until we are looking at a revolutionary. Director Walter Salles fills the movie with the textures of male friendship and of the road, the desert, the tropics, but it's Gael Garcia Bernal in the title role who gives the film its racing heartbeat. Just watching him ride on the back of a flatbed truck you can tell he's one of the greatest actors in the world.
I was away in Las Vegas for a while. Tourists from everywhere. I have to admit, though Vegas gets on my nerves in a matter of hours, it truly is a sight to see if you've never been there. A place like no other.
I don't think I saw the Sri Lankan handball team there. Oh, the reason I mention them is, nobody knows where they are. And they aren't a real team. And they don't really know how to play handball. And they left their dirty laundry behind. Zany globality antics.
Taiwanese rock is coming to America! It's not Mayday, though. It's Chang Cheng-yue. His music clips sound really good. If you're in one of the cities where he's touring, check him out for me, would you? There's too much on my plate right now, I can't make it.
Sometimes I think the anti-Bush crowd is too clever for its own good, but this is a thought-provoking (and totally unscientific) poll. People all over the world get their say in the U.S. presidential race. I dunno, maybe they're all expats. But hey, Kerry hasn't won every one! Strangely, Bush seems to be doing well in Africa.
